Instructions: Read the following scenarios, and choose ONE to respond to as a leader in the workplace (even if you are not in a leadership position).

A sales representative named Ahmed works in a multinational corporation with colleagues from various countries. During meetings, he switches between English and Arabic, depending on the language preference of the person he is speaking to. A few of Ahmed’s co-workers have complained about this.

As a leader, how do you respond?

A customer service representative named James works for a tech company that serves a global customer base. On a daily basis, he switches between English and Spanish when speaking to English-speaking and Spanish-speaking customers, respectively. Another co-worker has made several complaints about this.

As a leader, how do you respond?

Stereotypes and implicit bias in the workplace scenarios.

Read each scenario below.

(1) Identify examples of stereotypes and implicit bias in the scenarios.

(2) Review the attached Tools worksheet. Which tools would you use to address each of the issues you identified in the scenarios?

Scenario 1: Hiring Discrimination

Company X is a technology company that specializes in software development. The company is currently looking to fill a position for a software developer. During the hiring process, the hiring manager, John, receives a resume from an applicant named Jane. Jane is highly qualified for the position and has relevant experience in software development. However, John notices that Jane has an African-American name and assumes she may not be as qualified as the other applicants. He decides to not schedule an interview with Jane. He believes that it is better to not waste the time of the other members of the hiring committee.

Scenario 2: Microaggressions

Company Y is a marketing firm. One of the employees, Sarah, is the only woman in the department and often faces microaggressions from her male colleagues. For example, they often interrupt her during meetings, they talk over her and they frequently make comments about her appearance, or they assume that she is not as knowledgeable as they are. Sarah has tried to address these issues with her colleagues, but they often brush off her concerns and tell her that she is being too sensitive. Sarah starts to feel isolated and demotivated, which impacts her job performance. As a result, Sarah starts looking for a new job, which creates a high turnover rate in the department.
